Wiz Khalifa, the stoners’ favourite rapper, is back with a full length project titled Wiz Owens, and a music video for the title track, ‘Jet Lag‘.
The 13-song project has a runtime of about 35 minutes and opens with a boom bap rap approach on the track, ‘Jet Lag’. Wiz glides over this beat before segueing into ‘Crispy T’, a classic trap and boom bap inspired track where Wiz can be heard claiming to have put a lot of kush in these streets. We have a feeling he may not be lying!

The project has that classic Wiz touch, and is rather minimalist in its approach. Even the album artwork is a plain white slide with the name Wiz Owens on it. But to us, that’s a great approach — after all, it lets us focus solely on the music. On this project, we hear a more mature Wiz, who is aware of his current status within the culture and the industry at large.

This sentiment shows through beautifully on ‘Yellow Diamonds’, where Wiz talks about teaching young rappers what kind of music to make and what to smoke. This self assured confidence, with the air of having been there and done that is quite appropriate for Wiz, who has the persona and skill to back the claims up.

The mellow vibes continue on to ‘1200 to Smoke’, where Wiz raps about being unimpressed with newer rappers and how he’s been a real pioneer. With the continued calm confidence, he claims that he can feel the pressure building up but that it’s okay because he’s built for it. This journey of mellow, smoke worthy beats and raps continues on till we hit ‘On Bro’, which is when Wiz picks up the energy over a sampled high intensity beat — an instant rager.
He even hits you with the dance club vibes on ‘Dream about you’, which is a curious combination of guitar riff sheds and jersey inspired trap. Finally, the album signs off with a smoke break on ‘Smoke break’, where Wiz dives deeper into the introspection. He sounds more candid, more vulnerable, and certainly more renewed than ever before. The last bar on the track affirms this interpretation, as Wiz signs off as the ‘King of Weed’. All in all, if you’re the kind to take a smoke break with music at the end of a long day, this might just be the project for you. Check out the project below!
